FRIENDS GOOD WILL

By Ellen Fiedler
Ever since last year's HBC seminar (and even before), Heritage Boaters have
been interested in what's going on with Friends Good Will: the
Michigan Maritime Museum's new tall ship. As those who attended our HBC
seminar learned, Friends Good Will is a replica of a merchant sloop
that fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. The new Friends
Good Will was built in Albany, NY, and arrived at South Haven in
September 2004. The delivery trip involved volunteer members of the Ship's
Company (including HBC's former Commodore, Ellen Fiedler) who each served on
various legs of the journey and brought her through the Erie Canal, across Lake
Erie, up Lake Huron, and down Lake Michigan. For more info, go to
http://www.MichiganMaritimeMuseum.org and click on "Friends Good
Will"..Ever since Friends Good Will arrived at her home port of South Haven,
Michigan, all kinds of events have taken place. You can see it all if you go to
http://friendsgoodwill.net – an "unofficial website" created by one of
the Ship's Company volunteers.
Heritage Boat Club
By Lloyd Karzen
The Heritage Boat Club was established more than 20 years ago by a
small group of sailors who moored their wooden boats in Montrose Harbor. The
group saw the benefits of banding together to share their common interests of
researching, restoring, preserving, and encouraging the continuing use of
vintage sail and power boats. Today, the Heritage Boat Club boasts membership
of more than 100 members from the Chicagoland area bound together by two
things: their love of boating and heritage boats.

Wooden
Boats vs. Plastic: The Diehards vs. The Converts (A Debate)
Participants at one of the previous Chicago
Maritime Festivals were invited to come & find out why wooden boat lovers
are so dedicated to their crafts and why some have succumbed to the seduction
of fiberglas. It was a chance for participants to find out if owning a wooden
boat was for them.
Representatives from each side debated
the issues: Bob Jacobsen & Ellen Fiedler, ably assisted by Carl Hammer, who
spoke for the wooden boats and Pete Manika & George Najarian who extolled
the virtues of plastic.
